LaTeX

LaTex (pronounced, by me at least, as LAY-tek) is an extension of the TeX typsetting engine which was created by Donald Knuth. LaTeX is widely used to typset scientific documents of all types and is freely available and readily extensible. There are a number of very good guides available online (see below), and a web search will quickly resolve most any specific question that you might have.
LaTeX is directly integrated into Mediawiki, the software behind this wiki, allowing the seamless integration of mathematical formulae into articles. For further discussion, see the Wiki Example.
